Justus Liebig University Giessen

With approximately 25,700 enrolled students, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is the second-largest university in Hesse, Germany. Venture Wizards supported the ECM Startup Center at JLU with a guest lecture on "Lean Startup, Prototyping, and Design Thinking."

Lean Startup, Prototyping & Design Thinking

The "Lean Startup, Prototyping, and Design Thinking" workshop provided participants with a comprehensive introduction to methodologies and principles that help startups efficiently develop innovative products and services. The goal was to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to rapidly and cost-effectively transform ideas into market-ready prototypes.

Lean Startup Methodology

The workshop started with an in-depth explanation of the Lean Startup approach, a methodology designed to rapidly develop and test business models while minimizing upfront investment risks. Participants learned how to:

  • Formulate hypotheses about their business ideas
  • Validate these hypotheses through fast, iterative Build-Measure-Learn cycles

Prototyping Techniques

Next, the workshop introduced prototyping fundamentals. Participants were guided in creating simple yet effective prototypes of their product ideas to gather feedback and test functionality. Various prototyping techniques and tools were presented, helping participants quickly iterate and refine their prototypes.

Design Thinking for User-Centered Innovation

The final part of the workshop focused on Design Thinking, a user-centered approach to problem-solving and innovation. Participants learned how to:

  • Develop empathy for users by identifying their needs and pain points
  • Generate creative ideas and design solutions
  • Integrate these insights into their prototyping and product development processes

The interactive nature of the workshop allowed participants to work on real projects and receive immediate feedback on their concepts and prototypes. Through group work and discussions, attendees gained practical insights into Lean Startup methodology, prototyping strategies, and Design Thinking principles.

The workshop concluded with a reflection session, where participants explored how to apply the acquired knowledge in practice to develop more customer-oriented and effective products.
